About Hunger Fight

Hunger Fight

Struck by the number of children in North Florida who live daily with hunger, Sherri Porter founded Hunger Fight in 2012. Headquartered in Jacksonville, FL, we are a 501(C)3 nonprofit agency that began producing and distributing shelf-stable meals that are flavorful, nutritious, and easy to prepare in boiling water to those at risk for hunger in our community. In the last few years, after discussions with teachers and administrators, our organization developed Food for Their Bellies; Books for Their Brains, a two-pronged programmatic approach to address issues impacting a child’s success in school; hunger and lack of reading skills. The Feed the Backpacks program provides weekend nutrition for elementary aged children on the Federal Free and Reduced Meal plan, who receive food at school, but may be at risk for hunger over the weekend. The Feed the Need to Read program focuses on emergent literacy skills in children ages birth to 5 and provides books each month to children at no cost to the families.

In addition, Hunger Fight responds to the hunger needs of our community, seniors and in disasters. Our meals, which can be considered foundational meals and are delivered in a 4-serving package that offers serving suggestions in both English and Spanish, can be supplemented with meat, vegetables, chicken or fish to meet cultural and taste food preferences.

Hunger Fight’s success reflects the help we receive from the businesses, foundations, and community groups that host our packing events along with the thousands of volunteers who participate and pack meals. In 2020, over 13,252 volunteers joined us and packaged 2,497,831 meals and provided 64,140 books. We are your community!
